“The IDE that understands your code, not just a souped-up text editor.”
For Flutter and Dart, IntelliJ (through the official plugin) is irreplaceable. Its code understanding and refactoring are unmatched.
My IDE history is long: Code::Blocks at the very start, then Notepad++, Sublime Text, VS Code. When I got serious about Flutter and JVM contracts, I moved to JetBrains. I took a detour through Cursor in early 2024 to test native built-in AI.
Cursor is fast and the AI autocomplete is smooth, but the VS Code UI behind it can't compete with JetBrains on serious projects. Shallower refactorings, less reliable navigation in class hierarchies, and the Dart/Flutter plugin stays below the official JetBrains one.
The official JetBrains Flutter plugin is by far the best: deep refactoring, step-by-step debugging in the widget tree, rock-solid hot reload. And IntelliJ's code understanding engine really gets the structure, not just the text.
I went back to JetBrains after the Cursor experience. And Claude Code arriving next to the IDE took away my last reason to look for an "AI-first" editor: I get the AI without giving up serious tooling.
