Best high-end laptops in 2026: the guide by use case
The laptop market has not been this interesting since 2020, the year Apple shipped the first M1 MacBook and redefined what a laptop could do. In 2026, the market's answer arrives: ARM goes mainstream, Qualcomm makes it into the best buying guides, and Intel/AMD have to justify their place with more than software compatibility alone.
This is not an exhaustive comparison. It is a guide by use case, with a clear angle on what the 2026 market is really telling us.
The best with no compromise: MacBook Pro 14 M5 Pro
€2,499, 10/10
If you want to stop searching and buy the best laptop available today, this is it. The M5 Pro chip with 18 cores, peak brightness of 1,135 cd/m² on the Mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display, a Delta E of 1.57 (near-perfect calibration), 15 hours of battery life in office use, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.
Apple did not reinvent the chassis. It did not need to. This MacBook Pro became the absolute reference because it has no identifiable weak point. It runs word processing just as well as local AI models or 3D rendering.
The notch on the screen remains the only recurring criticism. At €2,499, it is the only real complaint.
The best for Windows creatives: Samsung Galaxy Book 6 Ultra
€3,199, 10/10
If macOS is not an option for you (software compatibility, preference, Windows ecosystem), the Galaxy Book 6 Ultra is the best answer available. And on one specific point, it beats the MacBook Pro: the display.
The 16-inch AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate, peak brightness of 504 cd/m² at full screen and a color temperature of 6463 K make it one of the best displays available on a laptop. For photo retouching, motion design, or simply someone who watches a lot of content: it is unbeatable on Windows.
Under the hood: Intel Core Ultra 7 356H paired with a GeForce RTX 5070. 14 hours of battery life. 1.8 kg, which is decent for a 16-inch.
Real limitation: the Samsung software ecosystem. Duplicate applications, Samsung features that overlap with Windows ones without improving on them. For purely professional use, it is manageable.
The balanced ultraportable: MacBook Air M5 vs Asus Vivobook S14
Two machines at €899-€1,099, two philosophies.
MacBook Air 13 M5: €1,099, 9/10
16 GB of RAM as standard, 512 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7, fanless and therefore silent, a full day of battery life "or even more" depending on usage. All in a 1.24 kg chassis with impeccable finishing.
The flaw: the screen is still 60 Hz IPS. In 2026, on a €1,099 machine, the lack of OLED or 120 Hz is starting to show, especially against Windows competition that already offers these panels at a similar price.
Asus Vivobook S14: €899, 9/10
Ryzen AI 7 350 (8 cores), 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB PCIe Gen 4, 14-inch OLED screen, 13-14 hours of battery life, silent (46°C max measured in testing), all-metal chassis.
At €899, the Vivobook S14 is probably the best Windows PC under €1,000. It does everything the MacBook Air does, with an OLED screen the MacBook does not have, for €200 less.
The real choice comes down to the OS and the ecosystem, not the hardware. If you are already in the Apple world (iPhone, iPad, AirPods), the MacBook Air fits in without friction. If you stay on Windows for software compatibility, the Vivobook S14 has nothing to envy the competition.
Battery life above all: HP OmniBook 5 and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i
HP OmniBook 5: €899, 8/10
21 hours of battery life in office use. That is the number that stops everyone in their tracks. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X126100, an ARM architecture, draws so little power that the 59 Wh battery lasts a day and a half without looking for an outlet.
The 16-inch OLED screen is pleasant, but limited to 60 Hz and without HDR (peak at 290 cd/m²). Connectivity is meager: plan on a USB-C hub.
If you travel a lot, often present on the road without access to an outlet, or simply want to stop thinking about the battery: this is the one.
Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition: ~€1,418, 9/10
15-16 hours of office battery life with a Core Ultra 7 258V, 14-inch 120 Hz OLED at 2,880x1,800 px, and above all: the best connectivity in its category for an ultraportable (HDMI 2.1, dual Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, microSD, headphone jack). No hub needed.
HDR mode is poorly handled. That is the only recurring negative. For everything else, it is the most complete Windows ultraportable on the market if you need to plug in everything without accessories.
For gaming: MSI Vector 16 HX AI A2XW
From €2,099, 8/10
Mobile GeForce RTX 5080, 16-inch 240 Hz VRR LCD panel, 90 Wh battery, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, 1 TB of storage. On gaming benchmarks, it sits at the very top of the range.
The trade-off is well known: loud at full load and 4-5 hours of battery life under heavy use. A portable gaming PC never claimed to be anything else.
If you want to play the latest AAA titles on the go with no compromise on performance, this is the right choice from €2,099 (RTX 5070 Ti / Core Ultra 7 configuration). The tested RTX 5080 configuration goes up to €3,299.
What 2026 reveals about the market
Three readable signals in this selection:
Apple is the default reference. 3 of the 9 recommended models are MacBooks. This is not editorial favoritism: it reflects a real lead in battery life, performance per watt, and software consistency. The question is no longer "is the Mac good?" but "do my constraints justify not buying a Mac?"
ARM enters the Windows market. The HP OmniBook 5 with Qualcomm Snapdragon X is the first Windows ARM PC to appear in a mainstream buying guide without a compatibility asterisk. 21 hours of battery life is the argument that silences the doubts. NVIDIA is arriving this fall with RTX Spark: ARM on Windows will keep progressing.
The €800-€1,100 segment has never been this competitive. MacBook Air M5, Asus Vivobook S14, HP OmniBook 5: three excellent machines at the same price, for slightly different uses. The mid-range no longer has anything to envy the high end of three years ago.
Which laptop to choose: the quick grid
| Need | Model | Price | |---|---|---| | The best, full stop | MacBook Pro 14 M5 Pro | €2,499 | | Pro creative on Windows | Samsung Galaxy Book 6 Ultra | €3,199 | | Apple ultraportable | MacBook Air 13 M5 | €1,099 | | Windows ultraportable + OLED | Asus Vivobook S14 | €899 | | Maximum battery life | HP OmniBook 5 | €899 | | Full connectivity + performance | Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i | ~€1,418 | | Gaming with no compromise | MSI Vector 16 HX | from €2,099 | | Small Apple budget | MacBook Neo | ~€699 |
One piece of advice that applies to all of these cases: always wait for independent tests before buying. Manufacturer spec sheets announce "up to" figures. Benchmarks tell you what actually happens.
